Origin

Jolo, Sulu

Medium

Silk

Dimensions

93 x 93 cm

Collection

Ethnographic Materials

Description

The pis syabit is a square head cloth worn by Tausug men but bears similarities with textiles worn by other Southeast Asian cultures along the Indo-Malay straits. This piece is an outstanding example of weaving prowess, forming perfect squares in each corner and on the center. It is woven using a tapestry weave – meaning that each color is inserted discontinuously, as opposed to inserting one row of weft through all warp threads at a time.
