Description

The barong has a lanceolate (leaf-like) blade shape and is used by several cultural groups in Mindanao and the Visayas. This example from the Yakan of Basilan is kept in a padded, velvet-lined carrying case and has an ornate sheath, covered with plain and decorated mother-of-pearl panels and inlaid with ten-centavo coins. The wood pommel is also intricately carved with naga- or snake-like designs.

It is likely a ceremonial piece and was not used for combat.
