The title of this abstract painting by Fernando Zobel (1924-1984) is based on a historic site in Catalonia, Spain. Gerona was a fort in the Iberian Peninsula and home to Muslim and Jewish populations. Active black brushstrokes could represent Gerona’s violent past while isolated blue-green and yellow stripes signify its multicultural roots. The composition also has the added element of sand, providing a textured surface.
