The strong, dark lines in this painting show the vigor and intensity of the pain of Jesus Christ bearing the cross. This is a familiar scene during Holy Week observances of the Roman Catholic Church. Ecstasy in Agony won first place in the 1970 Shell National Student Art Competition Painting Category.
