The lotoan is a ceremonial box for betel nut chewing and tobacco preparation. It is a common form of bridal wealth among indigenous groups of Southern Philippines. Inside are three compartments with hinged covers to contain the different components of betel nut chewing. This box features pre-Islamic okir patterns. In the center are the growing vine or crawling plant motif called birdo and in the narrow bands above and below are rows of naga or serpents.
