Lanao del Sur
Wood, glass beads, and tassels
6.5 x 8 cm diameter
Ethnographic Materials
A gukum is a portable cosmetic case for waxy materials such as beeswax, used as lip gloss or ointments. While many Maranao examples are made of cast metal and chains, this piece has a wooden container connected by a net of beadwork to an ornate flat handle with a symmetrical okir design. Numerous small bells and tassels adorn the strap.
