Description

Dated to the Paleolithic period, this tool found in Cebu is made from chert with veins of opaline quartz. Chert is a hard, fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of very small crystals of quartz.

This is not a completed stone-tool. Stone tools can be made by striking a rock, called a core, at an angle with another rock to slowly chip away its shape. The parts that fall off, called flakes, can also be used as cutting tools if their edges are sharp enough. A flake scar can be found on the side of this stone tool.
