Description

This burial jar is evidence of the ancient practice of secondary burial, widely practiced in Southeast Asia. When the body had decomposed after a primary burial, the remains are exhumed, cleaned, contained in this jar, and kept hidden. It is believed that the ancestors’ bones are the abode of ancestral spirits. The bones were cleaned with great care. The fortune or misfortune of a family depended on how the bones were treated during the preparation for re-internment.
